Set up your new NFC Tag

🛠️ Step 1: Download the App

First, you need the right “pen” to write to your digital paper. Download NFC Tools by wakdev via the links below:

Note: Ensure NFC is enabled in your phone’s settings. On iPhones (XS and newer), it’s always on; on Android, check your “Connected Devices” settings.

✍️ Step 2: Choose Your Record Type

Open the app and tap the Write tab at the top. Tap Add a record to see your options.

Option A: Direct Contact Details (vCard)

Best for pet tags or business cards.

  1. Select Contact.
  2. Fill in the name, phone number, and email.
  3. Tap OK.

Option B: Link to a URL (i.e. Google Doc)

Best for dynamic info (like a medical profile you can update remotely).

  1. Select URL / URI.
  2. Paste the link to your Google Doc (make sure the Doc’s sharing settings are set to “Anyone with the link can view”).
  3. Tap OK.

Option C: Any other option from the app

NFC tags can be programmed with so may options that cannot be listed here. Browse the options in the app and select whatever fits your need.
Don’t be afraid to experiment. Remember, unless you lock the tag (step 4 below), you can erase it and re-write it.

📡 Step 3: Writing to the Tag

  1. Once your record is added, tap the large Write / [Size] Bytes button.
  2. An “Approach an NFC Tag” prompt will appear.
  3. Place your phone’s NFC sweet spot against your 3D-printed tag:
    • iPhone: Top edge (near the camera).
    • Android: Usually the center of the back (or near the top).
  4. Hold it steady until you see a green checkmark and hear a “ding.”

🔒 Step 4: Optional – Locking the Tag

If this is for a pet or a public door, you might want to prevent others from overwriting your data.

  1. In the app, go to the Other tab.
  2. Select Lock tag.
  3. ⚠️ Warning: Locking is permanent. You will never be able to change the data on that specific chip again. Test the tag first to make sure it works perfectly before you lock it!

🧪 Step 5: Test It!

Close the app and lock your phone. Simply tap the back of your phone to the tag.

  • URL tags should trigger a browser notification.
  • Contact tags should prompt you to “Save Contact.”
